Yoga poses for non-flexible people
Gentle Yoga 101
Exercise can be a daunting word. Yoga can be even more daunting as images of people with their legs behind their ears quietly float throughout your mind. Imagine that you too can do the same with the help of Gentle Yoga. Postures in this form of yoga provide ultimate relaxation and can be performed by anyone, no matter your skill level. Let’s take a look at some poses that will help increase your flexibility.
The standing forward bend or Uttanasana, is one way to increase flexibility in your legs through your hamstrings and calves. It also strengthens the feet, knees, and thighs. To begin this pose, stand with your feet parallel and shoulder width apart. Inhale, stretch your arms up, and extend from your lower belly and out to your fingertips. Maintain your length, exhale, bending forward and placing your hands on the floor. If you are unable to rest your hands on the floor, no worries, use blocks to support your hands as you remain in that position for a few breaths. If you still feel that the blocks are too low to the ground, grab a chair. Place the chair with the seat facing you. Bend forward and place your forearms on the seat of the chair and when ready, rest your head on your forearms.
Another pose that is perfect for non-flexible people is Child’s Pose, however we will be using a bolster for support. To begin, sit on your heels with your shoulders above your hips. Place your bolster vertically in front of your knees. Bow forward and gently place your chest on the bolster. The bolster is used to support your torso and adjust if needed. Separate your knees to accommodate the bolster if need be.
Now let’s try out the crescent lunge. Start in downward facing dog. Inhale, step your left foot forward into a lunge and keep your back leg straight. Remember to keep your left ankle in line with your wrists. Inhale and lift your torso up and bring the hands to your hips. Rest here for a few breaths and relax. If you are feeling that you may want to take this pose a step further, extend both arms above the head.
These poses will help you to gain the strength and flexibility that you have always wanted. Try different variations and check out our Gentle Yoga class for an ultimate yoga experience.
