Small Steps to Greater Wellness
Our lives are busier at this point in time then they have ever been before. On any given day our schedules could be packed with work obligations, childcare, after school activities, errands, food preparation, community projects, and the list goes on. Fitting in self-care when there seems to be an unending list of “more important” items just doesn’t take priority sometimes. Putting everything (and sometimes everyone) before ourselves has become the norm. But making a conscious effort to care for yourself can result in amazing improvements to your overall wellness. Self-care doesn’t have to be a major obstacle to your daily routine, either. Starting small and working your way up is a great way to introduce improvements to your daily life. Check out some of the smaller steps below to see how you can get started.
Exercise
Before your mind jumps to huffing away in a gym every night of the week, remember the rule about baby steps. Exercise doesn’t have to be the stereotypical gym routine. It doesn’t need to include personal trainers or strict fitness plans. Small exercise steps pave the way for bigger paths of progress in your future. Instead of taking the elevator or escalator, take the stairs. Swap fast food meals for cooking a few nights out of the week. Schedule time for meditation, yoga, walking, or whatever form of self-care you find most beneficial, and keep a cold container of water by your side! These steps aren’t going to completely change your life overnight, but they are a perfect way to slowly start.
Routine
While we’re all about breaking out of your normal routine to mix it up as far as wellness goes, sometimes a routine is just what you need to work towards your goals. Putting a daily routine into place that benefits you is a great addition. These new steps can include daily time to practice yoga or meditate. It could be scheduling a walk after work or a long soak in the tub. Carving out time to meal prep or even watching your favorite television show are all positive ways to ensure you’re making time for yourself during the day. Mental wellness is as vital to your overall health as physical wellness. Always remember to make yourself a priority.
Mentality
One of the biggest steps you can take to improve your overall wellness is by maintaining your mental health along with your physical health. Working on improved mental health can start anywhere – from work to home. Finding coping mechanisms to deal with stress at work – like “office” yoga or meditation – is one way to ensure that you’re making a conscious effort to keep your mood elevated throughout the day. As mentioned above, scheduling time for yourself is always an important part of your day. Practicing yoga, going on a hike, a phone call with a good friend, gardening, or whatever other hobbies interest you. Staying healthy mentally is essential to an overall positive wellbeing.
